With each turn of the merry-go-round, the hurdling horses, frolicking frogs, and gallivanting goats leap across the landscape. These remarkable figures were created by highly skilled master wood carvers who emigrated from Europe. Upon arriving overseas, these craftsmen used their talents to created masterpieces using the medium of the carousel figure.
Carousel Animals reveals the artistic visions and extraordinary abilities of such master carvers as Charles Carmel, John Zalar, and Daniel Muller in over 100 photographs of spectacularly detailed carousel animals, created between 1880 and 1930.
Whether you are a collector, preservationist, or just someone with memories of whirling about on a merry-go-round, Carousel Animals will transport you through a rich and colorful history of a wondrous art.
Tobin Fraley's introduction to the world of carousels began in his grandfather's Seattle amusement park. After a period of studying wood carving, he opened his own antique carousel restoration studio in Oakland, California.
Fraley has also published his own calendars and books on carousel animals under the imprint of Zephyr Press. Beyond the world of carousels, Fraley created an internationally acclaimed character, a mischievous insect called Humbug, that is the subject of a line of collectibles.
Fraley lives near Chicago, Illinois.
